Eugene (Gene) Dowdy is a violin and mandolin player, orchestral conductor, music educator and music administrator from generations of family musicians. He is currently director of music and string coordinator at Schreiner University where he is also conductor/artistic director of the Symphony of the Hills. Prior to his work in the Texas Hill Country, Dowdy served as director of orchestral studies and instrumental conducting at UTSA, and for 7 years as head of music. Upon retirement in 2019, he was named Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Dowdy received degrees from UT Austin, UT San Antonio, and the University of Iowa. He has conducted and collaborated with the Brubeck family, Rachel Podger, KANSAS, Mariachi Vargas, and presented world premieres of numerous orchestral and operatic works. The UTSA Orchestra, under Dowdy’s direction, performed as the featured university orchestra at the 2017 TMEA Convention, and performed on tour in Texas, Mexico, and Italy. In earlier years Dowdy conducted orchestras in NEISD and for YOSA.
Gene remains an active conductor and clinician having appeared with numerous all state and regional orchestras around the nation, Mexico and Europe. He is a past president of TODA and TexASTA and former executive director of the National String Project Consortium.
